Do you feel that God "gives you songs"?  What does this mean to you?

I hope he does. But I guess it’s always a case of ‘seeing in part’. Sometimes people get silly and tell you ‘God gave me this song’ really forcibly, as if it should have been Psalm 151. But on the other hand, we do hope there is something, a Holy Spirit-breathed element in the inspiration of the songs, whilst using the skills God had given us musically and lyrically to craft and complete the song for congregational use.

How do you keep the tension between being contemporary and being Biblical when you write?

I think that you have to try and write in people’s language. So be poetic and be current. But there are some timeless, unchangeable pieces of vocabularly that we need to preserve and celebrate. Mainly, the names of God. But there might be need to explain these – whether that’s the lead worshipper, the pastor or even in the song lyrics themselves. Brian Doerksen does it brilliantly – “I choose to be holy – set apart for you God” – he tells us what the word holy means in the very same line of the song… now that’s what I call clever!
