Why Sing? |

Why sing? I’m not asking, “Why do we worship?” Its probably safe to
assume that if you are perusing this web site and reading this article,
you already understand that we were created to be testimonies of God’s
glory (Is. 43:6-7). In other words, we worship because God created us
to worship.
No, my question is not “Why worship?” I’m posing the question, “Why
sing?” Why do we, as the church, engage in singing as one of our
primary forms of worship? It’s true that worship is far more than music
and singing. Worship includes every activity of life (Romans 12:1).
Yet, it is also true that the church, especially the contemporary
church, spends a large portion of time singing together during our
corporate worship. |

The Journey of a Worship Leader |

The Journey of a Worship Leader
Around the age of four, while on the swing-set in my backyard, I
remember singing away and having tears come to my eyes. If anyone had
been around, I’d have been embarrassed. Instead, I felt warm inside and
peaceful. On the swings is where I spent my alone time thinking and
singing. This particular evening I began to realize that I was singing
to God. Looking back on it, I can see that He was already pursuing me
at age four and was calling my heart to His. |

Consumer Worship |

Consumer Worship
Several months ago a friend and I engaged in a conversation about
worship. Specifically, we talked about the recent “contemporary
worship” explosion occurring worldwide. It seems that just about every
church now offers some form of “contemporary or modern worship” in
their weekend services. Even mainstream bookstores like Barnes and
Noble and Borders carry a selection of Contemporary Worship. In fact,
in recent years, the demand for contemporary worship music, world wide,
has grown at such an exponential rate that the Time-Life Warner Worship
Series (sold through TV ads) has become their number one selling series
of all time; surpassing Elvis and the Beatles. |

Caring for Creatives |

I begin this article with a bit of inner conflict. As a creative person
myself, I really do not like to be categorized and labeled one way or
another. This tension of my own reflects some of the unique challenges
involved as we approach effectively pastoring and discipling those who
we’ll call creatives in our midst.
Gathered here are some helpful hints I have come across as I’ve had
both the privilege and the challenge of working with many creative
people over the years. I encourage you to consider these if you are a
leader of creatives and/or a creative leader of creatives. |

Rest In His Promise |
|
|

Written by David Ruis

Songs are birthed in many different ways. A few of mine, like “Mercy Is
Falling” have just spilled out of me in the environment of gathered
community needing little adjustment for wider usage. Others like
“You’re Worthy Of My Praise” grew over time and took more effort to
hone into an accessible song that the Church could use.
“Rest In His Promise” is a song that falls somewhere in the middle. The
beginning seeds of the song began for me at the end of a service. The
word that evening had been impacting, and as people began to respond to
the resulting work of the Spirit within them, I was called to the front
to facilitate a worship response that would be appropriate. Not wanting
to rush into anything, I just waited.
